Sometimes, You Just Can't Have Everything...

Brokeback Mountain was not selected as the best picture in this year's Academy Awards. After winning every major award and international film festivals, it was "snubbed" in favor of "Crash". Crash was very good and 'safe' but Brokeback broke, pardon the pun, the myth about American cowboys. Maybe the 2005 Academy voters didn't want to be known collectively as the "ones who finally made America gay". A recognition from the Academy would have said something to everyone: that the experience of love and its consequences is a universal one. It does not matter whether you're "straight" or "gay".

There will be other "conspiracy theories" of course. The watercooler in most everyone's office will be buzzing courtesy of those who are near-boredom in their cubicles. Plus, the entire "gay-dom" will be wearing black and try to appear somber for the ocassion.
