Runway 17

Raffy (aka Manila Hilton) and James (aka Tokyo Hilton) enact their "fantasies": a poor relation of the Hilton sisters for her and the 'Naked Chef' for him.

Every year, we look forward to "Runway", GAPA's search for their Mr and Miss. This year, two very good friends had a go at it. Raffy's already won twice before (2nd princess in 2002, 1st princess in 2004) and James is a newbee. The funniest and best part of Runway is the "fantasy" portion where each candidate shows off their talent. It can be a dance, a song or a monologue. Complete with costumes and props, each participant struts his or her stuff before a live, rowdy audience and a panel of judges. They have to perform under a strict time frame. Half of the total score is dependent on this portion so everyone tries to come up with a unique, sexy, funny and scene-stealing "fantasy".

So what's the whole point? The event showcases imaginativeness, audacity, talent and ability to keep up under tremendous pressure. Disguised as a "beauty contest", it serves as a platform for gay Asians in a very diverse community. Through Runway, gay Asians are given the attention they rightfully deserve and appreciated for their contributions to the community. Every year, the mayor of San Francisco recognizes GAPA by a proclamation naming the day as "GAPA day".

Well, Manila Hilton is first princess (again!) and Tokyo Hilton was second prince (surprise!). Regardless of whether they won or lost, we applaud them for their talent, bravery and audacity. We are already looking forward to next year!
